When you spoke about companies checking up on potential employees by datamining on certain website to check up on them, I know for a fact they do that here in the UK. There was a new report on bbc where a recruiter spoke about how he regularly checked up on candidates with facebook. People seemed surprised when they were asked about aspects of their life that they might not usually want employers to know about. This is a little creepy, but personally I'm very aware that anything I connect with my name online is very easy to mine, especially today with web2.0 and technologies like rdf etc.
